In her eye-opening and heartrending fourth novel, award winning author Tanya J. Peterson takes us inside the anguished mind of Isaac Bittman-an average family man whose mysterious and progressively violent mood swings, many of which he cannot remember, begin to unravel the lives of those closest to him. After a series of bizarre encounters, including losing his job and waking up half-dead in the wilds of Idaho, he begins treatment at a revolutionary mental health facility, where the childhood trauma he's repressed for decades leads to revelations that his personality has splintered into twenty-four shadows, or "alters." The novel intricately weaves together Isaac's internal angst and his wife and best friend's struggles to retain both a private and public semblance of normalcy. Stark and realistically rendered, Twenty-Four Shadows delves into the thought processes and erratic habits of a regular man dealing with life-altering mental illness, providing an empathetic, insightful glimpse into a misunderstood and often stereotyped condition.

TwentyFour Shadows Tanya J Peterson Books

Peterson's latest novel confirms her expertise in depicting people who deal with mental traumas. Her previous novel Leave of Absence portrayed a person suffering from depression with compassion and empathy. Twenty-Four Shadows explores another disorder that accurately portrays the methods that a person employs to cope with childhood experiences so upsetting that he dissociates into various personas. She illustrates all the clinical and psychological experiences in a manner which humanizes the perplexing states that her protagonist Isaac Bittman endures. Interestingly, one of Isaac's twenty-four "alters " as the various personalities are called, is named Ishmael who hates Isaac which references both the sibling rivalry detailed in the book of Genesis and Herman Melville's famous first line of Moby Dick. Peterson not only illustrates the ordeals that Isaac and all his alters endure, but also poignantly depicts how the disorder affects his wife, son, and friend. She encapsulates every one of its anomalies without being didactic or clinical. When the reader finishes this gripping novel he or she will understand all the multiple facets of this mental aberration and appreciate the skill Peterson employed to make the layperson understand them. I especially appreciated this novel because I had a student who had this syndrome, and the book helped me realize why my pupil's behavior changed drastically from day to day. The only criticism I have is that the book was so intriguing that I could not go to sleep until I finished it. Perhaps Peterson's next book will deal with people who suffer from insomnia that is a side effect which occurs when one reads fascinating books,

TwentyFour Shadows Tanya J Peterson Books Reviews

Having throughly enjoyed “Life in a Nutshell” I was pleased to find “Twenty-Four Shadows” to be another well written, thoughtful journey into the world of mental illness. A captivating read and a great book club choice.
Twenty-Four Shadows by Tanya J. Peterson is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late April. During a short stint of working in social security disability, I spoke with a man on the phone who was seeking supplementary income due to a long-term occasion of dissassociative identity disorder. Being extremely interested in his story and enrapt by its dynamic symptoms, I thought I'd read up on it to learn more.

Written in third-person narration with switched perspectives, this is a work of fiction that comes off like an ABC made-for-TV movie that's meant to raise awareness about a mental occurrence, but it just reads as very hapless, tone-deaf, and overdramatic.
Twenty-four shadows is a must-read. I fell in love with the characters. This book, just like Ms Peterson's previous ones, illustrates the struggles of living with mental illness. This is the most effective way to bring awareness of mental illness to the general reader. You get involved in the life of the character and all he is going through. The description of each emotion is so simple yet so powerful. It's a story about understanding, compassion and love. This book is proof that getting the right support, mainly from family and friends, is the most important part in healing and adapting to mental illness.
“Twenty-Four Shadows” A Novel, by Tanya J. Peterson is a heartbreaking story of a man, Isaac, who, throughout his life, never felt comfortable in his own skin.
After a major incident, Isaac is diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder). “Twenty-Four Shadows” unfolds Isaac’s struggle through his healing process and the unconditional love and strength of his family.
Tanya J. Peterson does a superb job in illustrating the intricacies of Dissociative Identity Disorder and the difficulties coping with this Mental Illness.
This book was given as a gift in exchange for an honest review.
Isaac is not just any regular guy, and despite having a serious disorder, he is lucky to be so loved. Tanya Peterson provides a fantastic view into the world of someone with dissociative identity disorder. This book is heavy, simply because it deals with real life issues of someone with the disorder and those in his life, but the book also leaves the reader with a sense of hope. This is a fascinating subject and you really learn about the disorder a lot through the narrative. I recommend this novel to anyone in the psychology field, or anyone studying to become a counselor or researcher, or anyone with a family member affected by any type of mental illness. There are many disorders out there that vary, but I get a sense that this book is a comfort to those who share their lives with anyone with any issue. I think patients could benefit from this book greatly too just to know they're not alone. The book is super descriptive with very real dialogue. I was amazed at how Peterson was able to develope the characters, especially the males.
Fictional account of a case of dissociative identity disorder. Writing is good. Not written by a clinician.
After reading Tanya Peterson's first two books about the lives of characters dealing with mental health issues ("Leave of Absence", & "My Life in a Nutshell"), I very anxiously awaited the release of "Twenty-Four Shadows" hoping this novel would be as well written, intriguing, and informative. Well, I am very happy to report that this book greatly exceeded my expectations! I had never understood much about the subject matter of her newest novel, which used to be referred to as 'split' or 'multiple' personalities... it really didn't make much sense to me. The more accurate name for this diagnosis is Dissociative Identity Disorder, and following Peterson's character Isaac Bittman through his diagnosis of and treatment for DID, this 'survival defense mechanism' and its causes became much easier to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Twenty-Four Shadows", and it held my interest from beginning to end. This author has an amazing talent for making the reader feel like he/she is right there with the characters with her in-depth descriptive details, and she writes in such an informative manner. Truly a GREAT READ!
