It's been a rough day for Ella Roberts. First, her social-climbing mother Valerie dragged her to a wedding—which always remind Ella that real life offers few happily-ever-afters. Second, Valerie’s only there to schmooze clients for the family business that Ella’s hated forever. And third, Ella gets a text from her latest disposable boyfriend, Chase NOT WORKING OUT. SORRY. I HAVE YOUR GYM SHOES. But things are finally looking up. The man Ella meets at the bar fills her with flutters and makes everything better. Gazing into Nathan Hayes’ kind blue eyes, Ella can almost believe that love at first sight is true after all. It‘s too bad that in just two months, Ella’s mother will be marrying Nathan’s father…in a double wedding with Nathan and his fianceé Natasha. She should back away. But Ella’s been unlucky in love too many times to ignore what she feels…so “taboo” turns to “game on.” This romantic comedy about love, temptation, and the desires that drive us is the first humorous contemporary romance from Lexi Maxxwell, author of La Fleur de Blanc, Together Apart, A Temptation in Time, and many more. This tale’s romantic humor is spot on…and will keep you longing, laughing, and turning the pages in time with your quickly beating heart.

Ella Roberts finally gets her meet-cute with the perfect guy, and falls in love at first sight. Then 20 minutes later she realizes that there’s no way in hell it will ever work out, which only makes the guy – Nathan – more perfect, and Ella more obsessed with how perfect they would be together. All she has to do is resolve a few of those pesky moral dilemmas that are part of the package, and all her dreams can come true. Why should that be impossible? Fortunately for Ella, her outspoken sister Carly has her best interest at heart, and tries desperately to be the voice of reason. She also provides some 20/20 insight into Ella’s love-struck lunacy that makes both sisters even more appealing.
The story-line reads like one of those delightfully problematic romantic comedies, and like the very best of that genre it reminds us that the only way to pursue our dreams is to be true to ourselves. Ella is an especially likable and vividly developed character. She’s this perfect combination of smart, sexy, obstinate, tenacious, and impulsive; all mixed with just the right amount of crazy. The secondary characters are also fleshed out, intriguing, and add depth to the story. This is a must read for anyone who appreciates a strong female lead in their romantic fantasies.

My Stepbrother the Groom Lexi Maxxwell 9781629550459 Books Reviews

This is one of those books that I tried so hard to like. I got about 25% through it, had an iPad mishap, thought I lost it, frantically tried to contact NetGalley and even Lexi Maxxwell about getting a replacement copy, and then was able to reload it, thanks to a somewhat precipitous backup I had happened to do. I thought - I hoped - that it would get better.

Aaaannnnndddd ... not so much.

It isn't that this is a bad book as much as it just feels rather lifeless and uninspiring. It feels overly familiar, in a "where have I read you before" kind of way.

Let's look at the synopsis Ella works with (but really for) her mother in a job she hates, is in a relationship with a guy she doesn't like all that much, gets dumped by text, has a glass of wine too many to salve her wounded heart, and winds up confiding in a gorgeous stranger with whom she feels an instant connection. Only - whoopsie! - he's the son of the man her mother is about to marry, and the gorgeous stranger is engaged to be married himself.

So, yeah, that sounds like something you've already read, doesn't it? I'd be okay with that if Maxxwell had interesting characters or something to add through her writing. Neither is there, though, and that's a disappointment.

Ella herself is annoying and immature, to the point where I prayed she would get dumped by everyone and have to start over. I think I'm supposed to feel for her because she isn't doing what she wants to do with her life and she isn't in a relationship. But she's so whiny and unappealing that I felt as if she had what she deserved. Another weakness is her sister Carly, who contradicts herself at every turn. I could not figure out why Carly was so awful to Ella (aside from Ella being such a pill), but it turns out that there is an answer for that, and, in fact, that answer is the best part of the book. Nathan, our hero, is likable and interesting, and I wish this had been told from his perspective because he is by far most interesting character.

Maxxwell uses a lot of humor in her writing, which helps make Ella a bit more endearing than she actually is. I liked what Maxxwell tried to do more in theory than in practice. The idea - a girl falls for a guy she can't have - is cute and ripe for romantic writing. I just couldn't get past Ella and Carly. They seemed too rote for me.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When Ella Roberts’ attends a wedding with her overly controlling mother Valerie she gets a text from her boyfriend telling her it’s over between them. After somewhat causing a scene by calling him back and yelling at him just before the wedding Ella heads to the bar to demand a drink. A handsome stranger, Nathan Hayes, gets the bartender to oblige Ella and has a brief conversation with her. Ella then declares to her sister she’s met the man she’s going to marry.

After the service Valerie introduces Ella to her fiance, which happens to be Nathan’s father. Not only is Ella’s mother planning to marry her new dream man’s father which would make them step-siblings but Nathan is also engaged to be married to Natasha and the two couples are planning a double ceremony in two months.

I honestly had a tough time in deciding how to rate this book. As a romance I think it failed horribly and some readers may be completely disappointed if they are expecting the typical two people meeting and falling in love romance. But on the other had it was funny, entertaining and kept me turning the pages throughout.

Ella was quite honestly a complete basket case throughout the story. She got it in her head that she felt something with Nathan she’d never felt before and that he just had to feel the same. Sometimes bordering on stalkerish tendencies with her complete obsession of her instant connection. That being said I kind of think of this like coming across an accident on the side of the road, you know you shouldn’t look but just end up having to do it anyway.

For myself though, I do like a wide variety of genres and I ended up completely entertained reading this story. I would warn though if looking for just romance this probably wouldn’t be for you. But if you would like a good laugh then this somewhat dysfunctional family, that could all use a bit of therapy, would probably give it to you.
I was skeptical at first, but really enjoyed this book. I am so glad I stuck with it. The yoga scene was laugh out loud funny. Very entertaining read.
